The laboratory targetskey issues of the field of urban water resources and water environment to carry out research. After years of construction and development, it has formed four interdisciplinary and distinctresearch directions: urban water ecological security, urban water quality assurance, urban water health circulation, and urban water smart management and control.  The members of the laboratory have been supported by more than 1600 funds such as the Innovative Research Group Project of the National Natural Science Foundation, the 973 Project, the 863 Project, the Key Water conservancy Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Science and Technology Support Plan, the National Key Research and Development Plan, the National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the National Natural Science Foundation Key projects, etc. The members of the laboratoryhave also been supported by a number of enterprise horizontal research projects and international cooperation projects.

Since its establishment in 2007, the key laboratory has vigorously strengthened opening up and cooperation with other universities, and established an operating mechanism for independent and open projects.  A total of 342 independent projects, with a total funding of more than 50 million yuan, have achieved remarkable outcomes, and won a number of awards. A total of 518 open projects, with a total funding of more than 33 million yuan, were granted to more than 70 overseas universities and research institutions, 70 domestic universities and research institutions, effectively improving the competitiveness and influence of the laboratory.

The laboratory carries out basic theory and technology application research in the face of major national needs and international academic frontiers, and has achieved a number of theoretical breakthroughs, technological innovation and engineering achievements. It has become an important base for scientific research, personnel training and social services in this field in China, and is a pioneer and leader in the field of cold environment and urban water in China. The laboratory has achieved a series of major original achievements, and has won more than 10 national awards and more than 60 provincial and ministerial awards.

The lab has established a strict quality assurance/qualitycontrol （QA/QC）system. In 2018， it received the CMAqualification certificate of inspection and testing institutions from Heilongjiang Provincial Quality andTechnical Supervision Bureau. In 2020，it received thequalification certificate of the International InterlaboratoryData Mutual Recognition Qualification （ISO/IEC17025）from the China NationalAccreditation Service for Conformity Assessment（CNAS）.
