题目:Resource Recovery from Waste with Bioelectrochemical Systems
时间:2017年10月27日(周五)上午9:00 —11:00
地点:城市水资源与水环境国家重点实验室612会议室
It has been proven in principle that microbial fuel cells can be used to harvest energy as electricity form wastewater, however the coulombic yields and power outputs are modest and currently some way off being competitive with alternative systems for electricity production from waste. However alternative uses of energy recovered from wastewaters by BES include resource recovery from waste streams (e.g. metals) or chemical synthesis. Using BES therefore offer a net environmental benefit from wastewater treatment and an economic and environmental upside of using a waste stream for high value product recovery.
Currently mineral and energy resources are primarily obtained from non-renewable geological deposits and the development of more sustainable routes to these resources is paramount. Industrial, municipal and agricultural wastewaters are potential sources of metals and chemical salts, acids and bases, and energy from oxidising organic matter in wastewater. Metal recovery for example is however hampered significantly because of their low concentrations in a highly complex mixture. Conventional methods, e.g. metal recovery technology from wastewater using chemical precipitation, filtration and solvent extraction, have low efficacy, high start-up or operating costs, and low metal selectivity. They can also cause secondary pollution from metal enriched sludge, from which it is not technically feasible to recover metals. Bioelectrochemical technologies to recover energy and minerals from wastewater while cleaning the wastewater offer the potential to overcome these problems. The development of microbial bioelectrochemical systems (BES), to use energy trapped in wastewater to recover metals from wastewater will be presented along with the development and testing of bioelectrochemical sensor systems that have the capacity for near-real-time simultaneous measurement of BOD and toxicity in wastewater.
Ian Head教授简介:
Ian Head is Professor of Environmental Microbiology in the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences at Newcastle University UK. He works with the Bioelectrochemical Systems (BES) group at Newcastle University which operates between the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences and the School of Engineering. Professor Head has worked extensively at the interface of engineering and biological systems and has published >130 papers in peer reviewed journals, including >20 on BES. His group leads microbial aspects of energy related research in the context of bioelectrochemical technologies, bio-degraded petroleum reservoirs and microbial recovery of energy assets. He is currently Principal investigator of the MeteoRR project (Microbial Electrochemical Technology for Resource Recovery), with 4 UK universities, 3 international collaborating universities (including HIT) and 5 industrial partners.
In addition, he has interests in the fate of spilled oil in the environment where his group has demonstrated the importance of bacteria from the genus Alcanivoraxin nutrient-stimulated bioremediation of oil in intertidal beach sediments. More recently he has been developing interests in microbial souring and corrosion in petroleum reservoirs. He was the recipient of the inaugural Young Investigators award of the International Society for Microbial Ecology in 2004 and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, the European Academy of Microbiology the Royal Society of Biology. He serves on the editorial board of Environmental Microbiology and is Editor in Chief of The ISME Journal.
